For the same price as an F-Type, you could have this stable. Brand new Ariel Atom and a lightly used Jaguar XKR.
Just sayin...

So really a brand-new Ariel Atom and soon-to-be-broken XKR.

Yeah, I'd much rather have an F-Type..

Make it an XKR coupe, and you have a deal.

Would you rather have a one night stand with a ten or a threesome with a 4 and a 2?

The F-Type is really one of the few cars you can't do this to. Really, one of the few cars. There is nothing that has come out in the last 15 years that is comparable in beauty with its performance that you can still buy for under $80,000... and everything older than it that you can is significantly less safe, reliable, or luxurious.

oh my! that IS a dilema. the F-type is pretty glorious, but you make a compelling argument

Not sure if you just called an Atom a 4 compared with an F-Type...

Actually the Atom is the 2 in my analogy. It may be into some freaky shit, but it ain't a looker.

Fair point, but I might counter that the V6 F-type will be cross shopped with the TT-S ($15k less) and the Boxster/Cayman S ($3K less), both of which have either trick AWD or limited slip diffs, which the F-type has an open diff.
The V8 F-type will be cross shopped with the SL55 AMG ($8k less and has 10% more power) and the Corvette ($34 less and 20% more power).
I'm just saying that's an awful lot of extra dough for any perceived advantage in style or luxury.

I get you overall point, that it's better to go for the highest quality, than 2 lower quality versions. But I don't think these two are THAT far behind the F-type. The XKR is still a very luxurious, and beautiful gran turismo with a monster motor. And the Atom is in a different dimension in the performance/fun category, which I do think is beautiful in that skeleton-watch kind of way.
To carry you're analogy, the question is "Would you rather a one night stand with a 10, or a threesome with a 7 and an 8." That's kind of the point I was making.

Boxster/Cayman yes, SLK55 perhaps, Corvette not likely.
There ain't nothing perceived about it. The Jaguar is the best looking car, with the nicest and most luxurious interior.

Then we'll have to disagree. It's certainly pretty, but I don't think it's any prettier than the new Boxster/Cayman. I haven't sat in the F-type, but the Porsche is quite pleasant inside.

I'll go as high as 7 and 3 vs a 10, final offer!
Seriously though I get what you were saying too. And the 1 ten isn't always the right answer, some people are into that sort of stuff...

I've sat in the F-Type, the new Cayman, the 991, the TT-S, TT-RS, every AMG (I have driven many of em as well).
The F-Type is right up there with materials and I think it has better ergonomics (and I'm a Porsche-phile). the new Cayman is pretty, but the F-Type is going to go down as one of the best looking cars of the 21st century.

But could you say the same of the F-Type in a few years? The XKR was Jag's flagship just a few years ago, so will we be saying the same of the F-Type?

Strong words. I guess we'll see. It is attractive no doubt, but I don't see anything ground breaking in it's styling. Kind of a better executed 370Z meets SLK meets BRZ. If I squint I see all those cars. But since it doesn't have anything that's particularly unique in it's design language, I fear it may just fold into history as time moves forward and we see other marque add new designs. But I agree that today, at this price point, you could argue it is the best looking car.

Yeah, just saying $65k is a lot of dough for 340 hp coupe with an open diff.
And $77k for 380hp? I can buy two of my 330 hp Z's for that, and still have $7 left over to stock them with cavier and Moet.
The only one that kind of makes sense is the R-version, which offers 550hp at $100k. That's more power than R8, 911, and SL AMG. But I think I'd choose those cars over the F-Type cause they just have so much more swagger than the little Jag.

Hopefully not. Jag didn't have it's shit together when Ford was bailing it out.

Switch out the XKR for an RS4 and you have one hell of a year-round stable. Sorry F-type, but I'll have to pass this time.

Could have had

300 hp Mustang V6s for that price!

Why you gotta brand me as the V6 mustang guy? I'm just making my case that the F-Type is way overpriced for what it is.

Not entirely true... You can find some older DB9's in that range, and easily some V8 Vantages. That's really the only 'fair' trade in my mind....

The whole is more than the sum of the parts... You can't really compare cars in this range by power alone unless you just plan on drag racing. In which case, yeah this isn't a great choice for you.

I know I'm cherry picking by just grabbing the HP numbers, but it's a convenient stat. Was trying to make the case that I think it's overpriced.
